CZARTORYSKI ADAM JERZY: (1770-1861) Polish Nobleman, Statesman, Diplomat & Author. L.S., Czartoryski

CZARTORYSKI ADAM JERZY: (1770-1861) Polish Nobleman, Statesman, Diplomat & Author. L.S., Czartoryski, two pages, 4to, Paris, 5th May 1846, to Denis Auguste Affre, in French. Czartoryski informs the Archbishop that a charitable lottery of 2000 francs has been won in a small town by Monsieur Innocent Drogon and that he is appreciative of the unexpected fortune which allows him to be the instrument of God in order to help the less fortunate. Czartoryski continues however to explain that Drogon's own circumstances are not good and that he has just recovered from a long illness, is incapable of regular work and has debts that he cannot repay, therefore asking that the Archbishop understands the dignity and misfortune of the Pole who would like to retain half of the lottery funds for himself and distribute the other half between the poor Polish and French people. Czartoryski concludes by remarking that he believes that the Archbishop is the only person that could grant the wish, knowing that he has a charitable mind and has always treated the Polish well. With blank integral leaf. One small brass tack appears to the left edge. VG

Denis Auguste Affre (1793-1848) Archbishop of Paris 1840-48. The Archbishop was killed while trying to negotiate peace during the June Days uprising of 1848 and his cause of canonisation has commenced.
