HARTMANN LEO: (d.1884) Russian nihilist and revolutionary who, in November 1879, attempted to assassinate Tsar Alexander II by blowing up the train upon which he was travelling from Livadia. Hartmann was later arrested in Paris, although could not be extradited, and subsequently spent some time in England, committing suicide in 1884. A rare A.L.S., L. Hartmann, two pages, 8vo, n.p. (London), n.d. (11th April 1882), to Dr. H. Donkin. Hartmann writes in slightly broken English (errors retained) and thanks his correspondent for their help, remarking 'My hilth improves more and more and now I have already a positiv hope to get better. Though I can not say yet I am well, my usual mental and bodily irritation, that always created me so many sufferings, is gone off', and further informing his correspondent that he has been out of London for much of the last five weeks, and not been available for consultation, but hopes to be available next week 'when I shall be back to London from Liverpool where I am going to day'. A small printed article clipped from the Illustrated London News of 9th July 1884 and relating to Hartmann and his suicide is neatly laid down at the conclusion of the letter.
