[INDIA]: LENTAIGNE WALTER (1899-1955) British Lieutenant General who served in the British Indian Ar

‘India has a long hard road before her before she becomes a great nation….’

[INDIA]: LENTAIGNE WALTER (1899-1955) British Lieutenant General who served in the British Indian Army during World War II, succeeding Major General Orde Wingate as Commander of the Chindits from 1944-45. An excellent A.L.S., W Lentaigne, one page, folio, Wellington, South India, 29th November 1949, to Ashley T. Cole, on the printed stationery of the Inter-Service Staff College. Lentaigne thanks his correspondent for their letter and continues to write, in part, 'As you may know I am a British Officer of the old Indian Army and in thirty years service have developed a great affection for India and her peoples. When in 1947 Great Britain granted India her independence two of the most senior India officers asked me to stay on out here for a year or so and start up this college for them. I am proud of this college and hope that next year we will have students from the American armed forces attending the class…..India has a long hard road before her before she becomes a great nation able to play her part in the maintenance of peace and prosperity. She attained freedom without a war, British statesmanship having learnt a great deal since the American War of Independence. Like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln India had two great champions of freedom and democracy in the persons of Pandit Nehru and Mahatma Ghandi (sic) Both Lincoln and Ghandi (sic) paid the same price for their convictions. It has taken America two centuries to reach her present status from the days when she was ruled from overseas. India hopes to achieve the same in a few years and I sincerely hope she does. But to do so she will require the advice and help of all those great nations who strive for peace and contentment. America by giving of her experience can help more than possibly any other nation'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Lentaigne. A letter of very fine content following the independence of India in 1947. VG
