JAMES BERTRAM 'JIMMY': (1915-2008) British Royal Air Force officer of World War II, a survivor of 'The Great Escape' from the Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp in March 1944. A large 4to signed and inscribed Birthday greetings card by James, featuring a colour illustration to the cover of various flowers and wildlife including butterflies, quail and a wood mouse, signed in blue ink to the inside, above and below a printed greeting, with an inscription to his wife, 'Darling Madge…[with best wishes]….for a Happy Birthday with all my love, Jimmy xxxx'. To the blank inside front cover James has penned a four line quotation, in full, 'The time has come the Walrus said/ To speak of many things/ Of mice and birds and butterflies/ Of moles and coloured things' which he identifies as 'From Alice in Wonderland (appropriately) in memory of wild life at the Lodge!'.
