[EDWARD VIII]: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A late Victorian gilt brass carriage clock previously belonging to Edward, Prince of Wales and presented to him by his maternal grandparents on the occasion of his baptism, featuring five bevelled glass plates within four decorative columns, a swing handle to the top, and a white rectangular enamelled dial with Roman numerals marked H W Bedford, Regent Street, W at the base (slightly rubbed), and with a movement striking a gong. Accompanied by the original winding key. The brass borders to the top are engraved 'To Edward from his Grandparents the Duke and Duchess of Teck, July 1894'. An unusual piece of Royal memorabilia. The working condition of the mechanism is not known. Some light age wear, VG

Provenance: Acquired by our vendor at an auction held by Drouot, Paris, on 20th April 2018 (their original lot label still attached) when they stated that the clock was gifted by the Duke of Windsor to his secretary.

Francis, Duke of Teck (1837-1900) Austrian-born nobleman, husband of Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge (1833-1897) Duchess of Teck, whose daughter, Mary of Teck, married King George V to become Queen Mary. King George V and Queen Mary had six children, the eldest being Edward who was baptised in the Green Drawing Room of White Lodge on 16th July 1894.
