ROUSSEAU JEAN-JACQUES: (1712-1778) French Writer and Philosopher. An interesting autograph manuscript, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d., in French. Rousseau writes a short text, being related to L´Antiquité Expliquée by Montfaucon, and states in part `The Roman and Greek women wore tunics, like men, but longer… The Platonic Philosopher Demetrius was accused and faced King Ptolomé for being the only one who did not wear women clothes during the Bacchanalia festivities, and the King would sentenced him to death if he did not wear the habits requested the day after...´ Small overall minor age wear, with edges irregularly trimmed and a very small tear to the upper edge. G £500-800 The present text corresponds to Rousseau´s work about the history of women, written between 1745 and 1751 for his benefactress Mrs Louise Marie Madeleine Dupin, and which would never be published. Bernard de Montfaucon (1655-1741) French Benedictine Monk. A scholar who founded the discipline of palaeography and who edited works of the Fathers of the Church. He is regarded as one of the founders of the modern discipline of Archaeology.
