Bidspirit auction | Levi & Salaman Sterling Silver
Levi & Salaman Sterling Silver Engine-Turned Napkin Ring, Birmingham 1917 - A single sterling silver napkin ring of substantial weight, produced by the noted silversmiths Levi & Salaman. The exterior features a fine engine-turned diamond-cut pattern, also known as barley-corn decoration, bordered by horizontal reeded bands at the rims. A central rectangular cartouche is provided for personalization and remains vacant, having never been engraved. The item is clearly hallmarked on the exterior with the walking lion (lion passant) for sterling silver, the anchor for the Birmingham assay office, the date letter ”S” for 1917, and the maker's mark ”L & D” for Levi & Salaman. Weighing approximately 34.89 grams, this is a heavy-gauge example compared to standard napkin rings of the period. Valuation basis: The estimate is based on the current silver spot price (approx. $28 floor) plus a premium for the early 20th-century maker, the excellent condition of the engine-turning, and the desirability of a vacant cartouche for modern gifting.
