Collection of Embroidered Tefillin Bags, Turn of 19th-20th Century
A dozen embroidered Tefillin bags. Russia / Europe, turn of 19th-20th century.
Embroidered velvet.
These bags, made between 1880 and 1904, most probably in Russia, are generally excellently embroidered. The name of the bag owner in Hebrew or in a foreign language and the Bar Mitzva year are embroidered in Hebrew characters or digits. Other embroidered ornaments include: Star of David, Tablets of the Law, Hanukkah Lamp, birds and flowers. A location - “Witebsk” - is embroidered on one bag. On another bag – the year 1880 – an architectural structure is embroidered with spires and a figure of a woman standing on the first floor. A wool pompon is attached to the lower part of the bag. Original lace for closing is attached to several bags.
Sizes and conditions vary, 19X13 cm to 27X20 cm. Overall fair-good condition. Worn velvet, embroidery is generally in good condition.
