Seder Tephiloth.

According to the rite of the Jews of Cochin and Cranganore.

Second edition.

Formerly in the collection of Prof. A.M. Haberman.

ff. (1), 100. Stamp removed from title. 19th-century patterned boards. Sm. 8vo.

Vinograd, Amsterdam 1984; Mehlman 297; Y. Goldman, India Catalogue no. 29 (this copy).

Amsterdam, The Brothers Proops, 1769.

Includes prayers and customs unique to the Cochin Community; particularly, the inordinate importance paid to the Festivals of Shemini Atzereth and Simchath Torah.

Intriguingly, the present edition omits the ritual for conversion that appears in the first edition of 1757 (despite the title page highlighting its presence). It is possible that the patron of the edition, Ezekiel Rahabi, felt an antipathy to the conversionist stance of the Cochin Jews and so re-issued their prayer-book with the controversial passages expunged.

Ezekiel Rahabi (1694–1771) was chief Jewish merchant of the Dutch East India Company in Cochin for almost fifty years.
