JACOB BEN ASHER.

(Tur) Choshen Mishpat [Rabbinic code].

First Edition with the Beth Yosef commentary by R. Yoseph Karo.

Printer’s woodcut device at end.

ff. 332. Lightly stained in places, previous owner’s inscriptions, opening and closing leaves with expert marginal repairs with a few words supplied in facsimile. Modern morocco-backed boards. Lg. folio.

Vinograd, Sabbioneta 49; Mehlman 733.

Sabbioneta, Tobias Foa, 1559.

First edition of this comprehensive, fundamental commentary by R. Yosef Karo on all the laws of Choshen Mishpat.

With astounding mastery, R. Yosef Karo (1488-1575) anthologized all the halachic-legalistic sources and adjudicative literature from the era of the Poskim HaRishonim. He both analyzed the theories and conclusions of those authorities cited by the Tur, as well as examined the opinions of those authorities that were unrecorded.

Issued by the author in his lifetime. R. Yosef Karo felt called upon to systematize the laws and customs of Judaism in the face of social disintegration as a result of the Spanish Expulsion.
