Chaim Vital. Sepher HaGilgulim

[on the transmigration and reincarnation of Souls].

FIRST EDITION.

Issued by R. David ben Nathan Gruenhut of Wiesbaden and Frankfurt (see EJ, VII cols. 946-7). Formerly in the collection of the late JJ Reich, Manchester.

ff. (1), 45. Lightly stained, outer margins with few short tears. Modern boards. Sm. 4to.

Vinograd, Frankfurt a/Main 59.

Frankfurt a/ Main, 1684.

The first published work of R. Hayyim Vital.

Contains the Lurianic doctrine concerning reincarnation of souls, as expounded by the Ari’s most eminent disciple.

The rabbis of Frankfurt took offense to the work’s publication due to concerns over the nefarious influence of the Sabbatian movement, which still raged rampant. Consequently, the publisher R. David Gruenhut, a renowned Kabbalist and Talmudist in his own right, commissioned Gentile printers, over whom the rabbis had no influence, to issue the text. See his publisher’s foreword on the verso of the title-page.
