HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE AUCTION – Up for Auction is a TOP POP Tied for Finest Known, None Finer, Spectacular 1907 $5 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle Graded ms68, near perfection. The 1907 Liberty Head half eagle was produced in a nominal amount of 626,100 circulation strikes plus 92 proof coins, and it is widely available in lower Mint State grades. The average mint state example grades a tad higher than MS62, at which level most are attractive and lustrous, well-produced but a bit banged up from coin-to-coin contact, as a rule.The 1907 Liberty Head (and the 1907-D and 1908 of the same design) seem anachronistic to collectors today, as it was, of course, the year that Augustus Saint-Gaudens' stunning new designs for the ten and twenty dollar denominations came to numismatic awareness. It would be 1908, however, before Bela Pratt's sunken-relief (intaglio or coelanaglyptic) designs for the quarter eagle and half eagle would debut.All this gives the late Liberty Head coinage a special fondness in collectors' hearts.
