Approximately 2.1 million Type One Buffalo nickels were struck at the San Francisco Mint early in 1913, the first year of the design. It soon became apparent that the denomination on the reverse was too exposed to wear, and the Type Two variety, with the denomination recessed in the exergue, was introduced later in the year. The 1913-S is the most elusive Type One issue and has been a favorite of collectors over the years.The design elements are sharply detailed and the impeccably preserved, textured surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster.
