Ein Ya'akov Second Section – the First, Extremely Rare Edition – Salonika, 1522 – with Glosses and Corrections in Ancient Script
Section B of the book 'Ein Ya'akov'. First edition that was printed in Salonika by Don Yehuda Gedalya.
The first section was printed in 1516 whereas the section before us was printed in 1522. He begins with the Yevamot tractate and ends with the Okatzin tractate.
This section if the book 'Ein Ya'akov' was completed by Rabbi Levi ben Chaviv, the son of Rabbi Ya'akov Ben Chaviv who started the enterprise of gathering Aggadot of the Babylonian and Jerusalemite Talmud and the commentary of the Rishonim on them. To these he added his own commentary which in the book is titled 'Ha'Kotev'. However, after having gathered and edited the Aggadot of the Zera'im and Moed tractates, he died and his son Rabbi Levi continued the work.
The book was first published in 1516. However, fifty years later, the book was announced by the Inquisition as heresy and was sentenced to burning, like the tractates of the Babylonian and Jerusalemite Talmud. The copy before us is one of the few copies that had survived the Inquisition! Extremely rare!
Ownership signatures "Eliyahu … Rachamim Bavli…", "The young Baruch Ma'aravi", "I the youngest among my townsmen … Yom Tov Caschi the son of … Ya'akov Caschi". Handwritten glosses and corrections. Some of the leaves have been completed by hand.
The copy before us begins with page 17. Pages 129-134, 180-181, 189-190, 197-200, 237-240 are missing. Pages 185-186 have been bound by mistake after page 188.
421 [should be 422], 7 pp, 11 [originally 16] leaves.
Condition: Fair-Bad. Tears and restorations. Handwritten completions, tears and folds, tears with omission. A few leaves are torn out. Missing binding. Moth signs throughout the book.
