[MUSIC AUTOGRAPHS] - EUGENE BERMAN (1899–1972) - Autograph Letter Signed to Adriana Panni - EUGENE BERMAN (1899–1972) - Autograph Letter Signed to Adriana Panni, Rome, 13 September 1971. Autograph letter in ink on Pineider watermarked paper, 270 × 215 mm, one leaf written on recto and verso, with original stamped and postmarked envelope, 115 × 160 mm. A warm and friendly letter from the Russian painter and stage designer, discussing his plans for the 1972 season with the Russian-American choreographer George Balanchine (1904–1983), including proposed productions of Pulcinella, Danses concertantes and Renard: “Sono ancora a Roma … dunque non ci vedremo a Venezia. (“I am still in Rome … so we shall not see each other in Venice. Balanchine was here for three days and we clarified a few things. We shall do Pulcinella in May–June 1972 in New York and, if possible, revive Danses concertantes, in the version I did with him for the Ballets de Monte-Carlo (though in America) in 1944; but everything will have to be reconstructed from scratch from the original designs or photographs, if we cannot get the designs back?! As for Renard, the question remains open, even though we can use the sets and costumes from the Filarmonica Romana, which you had so kindly offered! I have asked your secretary to lend me the colour photographs and I shall send them to Balanchine, asking him to send them back afterwards! I think the programme for the Stravinsky Festival is already quite full, and I have the impression that at present Renard interests Balanchine less than the other ballets. But this is not a final decision. Balanchine will probably be back in Rome in December to undertake more intensive work on Pulcinella. That is all the news …”)
