[MUSIC AUTOGRAPHS] - FERRUCCIO BUSONI (1866–1924) - Autograph letter signed to Hermann Scherchen - FERRUCCIO BUSONI (1866–1924) - Autograph letter signed to Hermann Scherchen, thanking the conductor for once again successfully championing his cause. 24 December 1921. Autograph letter signed (“F. Busoni”), in German, to the conductor Hermann Scherchen (1891–1966). 24 December 1921. One page, manuscript in ink. An attractive association letter from Busoni to one of the foremost champions of modern music, warmly thanking Scherchen for his continued advocacy. Busoni writes that he has learned from both private communications and published reports that Scherchen has once again successfully championed his cause: “dass Sie meine Sache wieder siegreich verfochten” (“that you have once again successfully championed my cause.”) He expresses his heartfelt appreciation and gratitude, adding that he believes he has already had occasion to demonstrate these feelings to Scherchen in the past. Busoni then refers to a forthcoming or proposed engagement and expresses the hope that it will provide an opportunity for the two men to meet again. He closes with warm greetings and good wishes. The letter testifies to the close ties between two major figures of early twentieth-century music. Scherchen was among the period’s most energetic advocates of contemporary composition, and Busoni’s acknowledgement that he had “once again” championed his cause reveals the conductor’s continuing role in promoting his work.
