[VARIOUS AUTOGRAPHS, LETTERS, & DOCUMENTS] - ENRICO FERMI (1901–1954) - Autograph Letter Signed concerning his domestic life in Rome, 18 October 1928 - ENRICO FERMI (1901–1954) Autograph Letter Signed concerning his domestic life in Rome, 18 October 1928 Autograph letter signed “Enrico Fermi”, in Italian, Rome, 18 October 1928, to Avv. De Marinis. Two pages. An unusually personal letter from the young Enrico Fermi, concerning the practicalities of everyday life in his Rome apartment building during the early years of his scientific career. Fermi discusses the appointment of a new porter, arrangements for the use of the laundry on Fridays and Saturdays, and the payment of 150 lire towards his share of the building’s expenses. The letter provides an intimate glimpse of the everyday life of one of the twentieth century’s greatest physicists at a remarkable moment in his career. In 1928 Fermi was only twenty-seven years old and already held the chair of theoretical physics at the University of Rome. These were the years in which the group of young physicists around Fermi was taking shape that would subsequently become celebrated as the “Via Panisperna boys”. Signed at the conclusion in full, “Enrico Fermi”. An appealing document of Fermi’s private life in Rome at the outset of his remarkable scientific career: the young physicist, already a university professor, attending to porters, laundry arrangements and ordinary expenses alongside the work that would soon establish his international reputation. One item: autograph letter signed, two pages, Rome, 18 October 1928.
