His collection reflects his interest in the Delaware Valley, with an emphasis on mid 18th through early 19th century silversmiths and figured hardwoods vetted by his discerning eye for form and surface. Among the highlights are a Thomas Stretch Philadelphia clock, a collection of figured maple furniture, and silver by noted makers such as Joseph Richardson Sr. and Richard Humphreys.

Chester County, Pennsylvania Walnut 'Octorara' Tall Chest

A Chester County, Pennsylvania Queen Anne Walnut 'Octorara' Tall Chest, Second Half 18th Century. The molded cornice above three short drawers over two short drawers over three long graduated drawers and base molding, raised on removable Spanish feet with incised scrolled spurs, fastened with wooden threaded screws. Five of the short drawers with Quaker locks. Chestnut and tulip poplar secondary wood, with full depth dust boards.

Dimensions: Height 62in; width 41in; depth 22in; case width 38in.

Provenance: Property from the Collection of C. Thomas Attix Jr., East Windsor, New Jersey.

 

 


Condition:

Structurally sound. retaining an old dry surface. The brass pulls are replaced and hiding center holes to drawer fronts, the brass escutcheons are possibly original. Shrinkage and fading to sides of case. Small losses to the corners of lip molding to drawer fronts. Glued repair to base molding. General marks, wear, abrasions, and surface scratches overall.
