Pair of Philadelphia Carved Walnut Side Chairs
A Pair of Philadelphia Carved Walnut Four-Shell Side Chairs, Third Quarter 18th Century. The Cupid's bow crest rail with scrolled ears, centered by a scallop shell, above a solid splat and trapezoidal slip seat, the front rail with central scallop shell, raised on cabriole front legs with shell carved knees, terminating in claw-and-ball feet, the side rails having through tenons and pinned into the raked back legs with stump feet. The front seat rails stamped 'V' and 'VI'.
Dimensions: Height 42in; width 23in; depth of seat 15 1/2in; seat height 17in.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of C. Thomas Attix Jr., East Windsor, New Jersey.
Condition:
Structurally sound. Each in an overall restored condition. One chair with an old repair to each stile where they meet and pin to the crest rail. The other chair with old replacements to front knee returns. The upholstery is in good condition overall.
