‘UNFORTUNATELY, I AM UNABLE TO FULFIL HIS REQUEST ON BEHALF OF THE HOLY REBBE OF BELZ SHLITA’ – A REPLY TO A REQUEST FROM THE IMREI BARUCH OF VIZHNITZ TO SEND WINE FROM ERETZ YISRAEL TO RABBI YEHOSHUA ROKACH, REBBE OF BELZ. INTERESTING LETTER FROM REB ELIMELECH PERLMAN OF YERUSHALAYIM TO REB MOSHE BRUMMER, GABBAI OF THE REBBE OF VIZHNITZ, IN 1891, CONTAINING UNKNOWN INFORMATION ON CONTEMPORARY LIFE IN YERUSHLAYIM.

A 4-side letter from Yerushalayim containing interesting insights into contemporary events in Eretz Yisrael, sent by leading Yerushalayim activist Reb Elimelech Perlman, to Reb Moshe Brummer, gabbai of the Imrei Baruch of Vizhnitz.
The letter begins with an account of sums received from the Kollels of Kosov and Vizhnitz for the poor of Yerushalayim. It continues with an interesting reference to a request to obtain sweet wine from Eretz Yisrael for the Rebbe of Belz, for medicinal purposes. The writer says that he cannot fulfil the request as this particular sweet wine would turn sour before arriving in Belz, and recommends an alternative wine for the purpose.
The latter section of the letter refers to the dispute between the Kollel centred in Lvov and the Vizhnitz Kollel, and asks R. Moshe Brummer, ‘to ask the holy Rebbe [of Vizhnitz] to write to the holy Rebbe of Belz the truth that is known to the Rebbe about me.’ It also contains information on emigration of Russian Jews to Eretz Yisrael and their expulsion by the authorities, and reveals much previously unknown information on Jewish life in Eretz Yisrael at the time.

Reb Elimelech Perlman, son of Rabbi Yisrael Isser of Rozvadow and grandson of Rabbi Asher Kahana – Shapira of Zholin - Yerushalayim, settled in Yerushalayim ca. 1850. Reb Elimelech was a leading activist within the chassidic community in Yerushalayim and was involved in the establishment of a number of new residential neighbourhoods, including Batei Perlman, near Meah She’arim.
Reb Moshe Brummer, secretary and confidante of the Rebbes of Vizhnitz.

4 sides. 23 x 29 cm. Good condition.
