RARE! MANTUA RABBIS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS WRITE IN PRAISE OF SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE. 1864.
Letter dated 1864, written by Rabbis of Mantua, Italy, in response to the proposal of R. Eliezer Lipman Silberman of Lyck, editor of Hamaggid, to publish a book containing letters of appreciation and blessings to Sir Moses Montefiore from rabbis and communities around the Jewish world. In their letter, the Rabbis and lay-leaders of the Mantua community support Rabbi Silberman’s idea and praise Sir Moses Montefiore for his activities to help Jews in danger around the world.
The letter is signed by
Rabbi Mordechai HaLevy Mortara, Rabbi Shlomo Nissim and Rabbi Yekusiel Chaim HaCohen of Sabbioneta, as well as the lay-leaders of the community:
R. Avraham Norzi, R. Yosef Baruch Norzi, R. Matzliach Yehuda Moshe Chaim, R. Shani Yehuda Refael Fano, R. Benyamin Yehuda Shlomo Hai, R. Shlomo Nachliel Madoni and bears the official stamp of the Mantua Jewish community.
Sir Moses and Lady Judith Montefiore, great British philanthropists who devoted their lives to improving the conditions of Jews around the world through their generosity and political intervention.
