Long Teshuva written by Rabbi Simcha Bunem Sofer – Schreiber (1843-1907), leading Hungarian rabbinical leader, Rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva of Pressburg (Bratislava) and author of Shevet Sofer, addressed to Rabbi Eliezer Zussman Sofer, Rabbi of Halash and Paks.

This rare and elaborate letter was written by the Shevet Sofer in his youth, while he was a chosson. The letter includes Talmudic discussions and refers several times to the author’s father, the Kesav Sofer. The author also refers to his own assistance to his father and includes a heartfelt invitation to Rabbi Sofer to attend the author’s forthcoming wedding.

RARE. No comparable letter of this length, clarity and date by the Shevet Sofer has been offered at auction previously!

The Shevet Sofer succeeded his father as Rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva of Pressburg at the age of 29 and was soon recognised as the leading rabbinical leader of Austro-Hungary, like his father and grandfather before him. He was held in the highest esteem by his father, as well as by elder contemporary rabbinical leaders, including the Divrei Chaim of Sanz, the Maharam Shik, the Rebbes of Belz, and by Rabbi Eliezer Zussman Sofer (a disciple of his grandfather the Chasam Sofer) – to whom this letter is addressed.

Rabbi Eliezer Zussman Sofer, Rabbi of Halash and Paks, was a disciple of the Chassam Sofer, his son the Ksav Sofer and of the Maharam Shik. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Yoel Ungar, Rabbi of Paks, whom he succeeded in 1886. Author of Yalkut Eliezer and many other rabbinic works.

Dated 1864. Good condition. [3] large sides, 34x21 cm. Old repair at back of signature.
