RABBI MORDECHAI TZVI SCHWARTZ, RABBI OF KEHILLA KEDOSHA SHOMREI SHABBOS – CLEVELAND – INTERESTING LETTER TO RABBI TZVI HIRSH FERBER OF LONDON REGARDING THE USE OF ESROGIM FROM ERETZ YISRAEL, AND OTHER MATTERS. Rabbi Schwartz enquires after the welfare of his old friend Rabbi Ferber with whom he had not been in touch for a long time, and asks him to send him his published works, and also advises him to remarry. The most interesting and important part of the letter deals with the author’s objections to using esrogim from Eretz Yisrael, ‘As I do not trust the Zionist farmers regarding the prohibition of orla, shvi’is and grafting. Although I favour the fruits of Eretz Yisrael, I am not obliged to lose my money and my soul by not fulfilling the Torah commandment and even reciting brachos in vain chas veshalom...’ Rabbi Mordechai Tzvi Schwartz studied under Rabbi Chanania Yomtov Lippa Teitelbaum of Sighet, who chose him to revise Torah studies with his son Rabbi Yoel – later to become the famous Rebbe of Satmar. Rabbi Schwartz was a son-in-law of Rabbi Zev Wolf Tzitron of Darag. He came to London and served as Rabbi in London and then in Hull, before leaving in 1929 to take up an appointment in Cleveland Ohio. Author of Drushei Chachma Vadaas and other works. Rabbi Tzvi Hirsh Ferber was born in Lithuania and studied under Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor of Kovno, Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer and Rabbi Naftali Amsterdam. He was a leading rabbinical scholar and leader in London, heading an independent community in the West End and heading the Hisachdus Harabanim in England.
