RABBI YAAKOV MOSHE CHARLAP (1882-1952) OF JERUSALEM, TWO LETTERS TO RABBI TZVI HIRSH FERBER (1879-1966) OF LONDON.


Two handwritten letters to Rabbi Ferber from Rabbi Yaakov Moshe Charlap of Jerusalem. The first letter, dated 1937 is a receipt and thanks for a donation to the Yeshiva, and the second, dated 1939, expresses good wishes for the New Year.

Rabbi Yaakov Moshe Charlap, son and disciple of Rabbi Zevulun Charlap (Dayan of the Beis Din of Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin in Jerusalem), disciple of Rabbi Hirsh Michel Heller and of Yeshivas Toras Chaim. From 1904 he became very close to Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook and was greatly influenced by him. In 1909 he was appointed Rabbi of the Shaarei Chessed neighbourhood and later also of Rechavia. Joined Rabbi Kook on two tours of new settlements in order to strengthen religious observance. Appointed Rosh Yeshiva of Merkaz Harav in 1935. Author of Mei Marom and Beis Zevul.

Rabbi Tzvi Hirsh Ferber was born in Lithuania and studied under Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor of Kovno, Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer and Rabbi Naftali Amsterdam. He was a leading rabbinical scholar and leader in London, heading an independent community in the West End and heading the Hisachdus Horabonim in England. First Rosh Yeshiva of Manchester Yeshiva and later heading the Etz Chayim Yeshiva in London. Talented speaker and author of 14 rabbinic works, including Kerem Hatzvi.
