CHINESE PAINTED POTTERY MASK, TANG DYNASTY (AD 618-907). In the form of a pierced horned beast with black painted eyes, flared nostrils, bearing its teeth, enriched in red pigment, mounted on a Perspex display stand. The mask 24cm wide, the stand 30cm x 33.7cm. Provenance: Property of a Lancashire family.
Section at edge of mask, which is pierced has been cracked and retuck, the two old rusted iron nails have been used either side of the mask to mount it to something previously and these are still in-situ but do not detract from the decorative appeal. Slight chipping to tips of horns and beard, short crack to rim, some surface wear and flaking overall which is typical for age and type of pottery.
