A LATE 19TH CENTURY PERSIAN GOBLET-SHAPED KHATAM KARI MARQUETRY TOMBAK. The drum inlaid with bone, mother-of-pearl, brass and wood with a continuous micro mosiac pattern of geometric star shapes within bone cartouches, on cylindrical stem and spreading foot. 47.5cm high
There are several large areas of losses to the marquetry decoration, exposing the wooden carcass beneath. Some of the border inlays are loose at the upper and lower edges and are present. The underside of the drum is also inlaid and there are some small losses there. The drum's skin covering remains intact and it is a functioning instrument although the skin is a later replacement.
