A CHINESE BAMBOO JACKET, QING DYNASTY. Of net-like construction formed from small interlocking bamboo segments, edged in cream silk, with two ties marked with characters in black, 65cm x 171cm

The use of bamboo in undergarments dates back to the Ming Dynasty. They were worn by Court Officials and aided the circulation of air while also protecting outer silk robes from soiling during hot weather. See the similar jacket in the collections of the National Museum of Singapore (Inv. No. G0309) and the example sold in The Imperial Wardrobe: Fine Chinese and Costumes from the Linda Wrigglesworth, Christie's, New York, 19 March 2005, lot 125. Scattered small areas of damage and some small holes to the bamboo. The damage is more evident at the edges of the garment, mainly to the sleeves, with a small hole just below one shoulder to chest, discolouration to silk edging and ties.
