THREE LATE 19TH CENTURY CHINESE LACQUER AND PEN WORK TEA CHESTS IN GRADUATING SIZES. The larger chest decorated to the front with warriors before a turreted building, the sides with flower-sprays and the top with fruits and flowers, within Key pattern borders, with carry handles, lined with blue paper, H47cm x 45.5cm square, the smaller chests decorated in red and black lacquer with figures to the front and flowers and bamboo sprays elsewhere, H35cm x 42cm x 32cm and H28cm x W28cm x D27.5cm. (3) The larger chest - lacking lock, majority of clasp, later chain added to hold open cover, some tears and losses to blue lining paper, some splitting and slight fading to top and deep splitting to the base, losses at corners and edges.
The medium sized chest - lacking carry handles and some of clasp, some similar splitting to the top and some losses at edges and corners. Castors added to base.
Smallest chest - lacking handles, clasp and with replacement hinges, with later string/hook opener added to cover, some retouching to damaged areas, splitting to top.
Overall there are areas of later in-filling, some repairs to joints and retouching to decoration.
