India 1875 Bombay Oriental Bank Corporation Bill of Exchange to Union Bank of London
An exceptional specimen of 19th-century international finance: Bill of Exchange issued by the Oriental Bank Corporation in Bombay on 5 November 1875, payable six months after sight. This “Second of Exchange” was directed to The Union Bank of London, 2 Princess Street, and ordered the payment of £200 Sterling to Messrs. Wm. Brandt's Sons & Co.
The document features elegant engraved typography, British royal coat of arms with “Incorporated by Royal Charter”, watermark security design, and the detailed printed terms of the transaction. Signed by the bank’s officials, including the Accountant.
This bill highlights the global financial operations of British imperial trade, linking Bombay, London, and global merchant houses during the high tide of colonial commerce.
