The holy Rebbi Yisrael Alter of Gur (1895–1977), known as the Beit Yisrael, was the son and successor of his father, the Imrei Emes of Gur. As a child, he had the privilege of studying Torah with his grandfather, the Sfat Emet, and was already known then as a great prodigy. Even during his father’s lifetime in pre-war Poland, he was renowned for his genius and holiness. After the devastation of World War II and the passing of his father, the *Imrei Emes*, he was appointed to succeed him. In Israel, he rebuilt Judaism in general and the Gur Chassidut in particular. He led with great sanctity and was known as a righteous foundation of the world, drawing even those distant from Chassidut and Torah closer to Hashem. He turned many people and their families into devout, God-fearing Chassidim. He passed away on the 2nd of Adar, 1977. Zt''l.
