The illustrious and mighty scholar of Torah, Rabbi Shimon Greenfeld, the "Maharshag" (1861 – passed away on 19 Shevat, 1930), was the greatest halakhic authority in Hungary during his generation, and a devoted disciple of Rabbi Moshe Schick (the Maharam Schick). Even in his youth, he was a student of Rabbi Chaim Halberstam, the "Divrei Chaim" of Sanz, of blessed memory. He corresponded with the great sages of his generation on matters of halakha, and they addressed him with reverence: "May life and peace be upon you, and greetings of Torah and peace, to the honorable and renowned rabbi, famous throughout all corners of the world and distant islands, our master, the righteous foundation of the world, Rabbi Shimon Greenfeld, Av Beit Din of Szentmihály.."
The holy Rabbi, author of *Mishnat Sachir*, called him "the great of the generation." In his youth, he served as a dayan in Munkatch, and in 1907, he was appointed to succeed his holy father, the author of Kol Yehuda, as Av Beit Din of Szentmihály.. Renowned for his immense genius, one of the responsa in his work She'elot U'Teshuvot Maharshag contains a profound answer he wrote when he was only 14 years old.
