Framed Prints – Francis Nicholson (1753–1844) - Framed Prints – Francis Nicholson (1753–1844), ”The Convent” and ”View of St Peter's Church, Stourton, and Bristol High Cross” A pair of finely mounted and glazed prints after original watercolours by Francis Nicholson, one of the earliest English artists to champion watercolour as a primary medium. These works depict picturesque scenes from the Stourhead estate in Wiltshire, commissioned by Sir Richard Colt Hoare in the early 19th century. 1) ”The Convent” presents a romanticised view of a secluded building nestled among trees, with a figure seated in contemplation — a composition balancing architectural mass with open landscape.2) ”View of St Peter's Church, Stourton, and Bristol High Cross” captures the church and the relocated medieval market cross, originally from Bristol and installed at Stourhead in 1765, blending ecclesiastical architecture with ornamental Gothic revival elements. Both prints are housed in ornate dark wood glazed frames with gilt beading and corner rosettes 60 x 50cm (Loc 431)
