3 x Framed Prints – John Sell Cotman, ”On the River Greta” and ”Greta Bridge” - 3 x Framed Prints – John Sell Cotman, ”On the River Greta” and ”Greta Bridge”, A pair of reproduction prints after original watercolours by John Sell Cotman, a leading figure of the Norwich School of painters and one of Britain's most accomplished early 19th-century landscape artists. These works reflect Cotman's distinctive style — combining architectural precision with atmospheric restraint — and his fascination with the River Greta in North Yorkshire, a recurring subject in his oeuvre. 1. ”On the River Greta, Yorkshire” A tranquil riverside scene showing Greta Bridge from the bank, with rocks in the foreground, a single-arched stone bridge mid-scene, and trees and buildings beyond. The composition is rendered in soft washes of ochre, slate, and green, typical of Cotman's watercolour technique. The original drawing is held in the British Museum collection. 2. ”Greta Bridge” A closely related view, likely based on Cotman's c.1805 watercolour, showing the same bridge from a slightly different angle, with foreground boulders, flowing water, and distant hills. This version emphasises the architectural form and geological features, with Cotman's hallmark use of muted tones and simplified shapes. Both prints are presented in gilt and black frames with cream mounts, glazed for preservation and decorative display. 40 x 40cm (Loc 530)
