Pedestal Table ”Col de Cygne” (Louis-Philippe Style) - Pedestal Table ”Col de Cygne” (Louis-Philippe Style) This striking pedestal table, known as the ”Col de cygne” (Gooseneck) characteristic of the Louis-Philippe style (c. 1830–1848), a period marked by a return to stability and a blending of earlier classical elements with a simplified, bourgeois sensibility. The piece falls into the Louis-Philippe style, which favored comfort, solidity, and a restrained interpretation of historical styles, often referencing the classical forms of the Empire and the curves of the Restoration. The furniture often has heavy bases and less ornate ornamentation than previous eras. Carving Shape (Col de Cygne/Gooseneck): The defining feature is the dramatic hand-carving work of the supports. The legs are shaped into the ”Col de cygne” (swan's neck) motif, where the curving supports emulate the graceful neck and head of a swan. This motif is a direct and dramatic revival of the Empire style (c. 1803-1815), which heavily favored classical Greek and Roman mythological creatures, but is executed with the less severe finish typical of the Louis-Philippe period. The swan heads are often finished in gilt bronze (as suggested by the image's gold accents). Leg Terminations: The feet are often carved to resemble animal paw feet another classical revival element. Manner of Furniture: The table is a type of guéridon (small, round occasional table). It is constructed from solid cherry wood and features a cylindrical or oval form with a single drawer in the belt. The entire piece is unified by decorative bronze trim along the top, drawer, and shelves, which contrasts sharply with the dark wood finish. The base is heavy plinth-like, providing the stability preferred during the Louis-Philippe era. This table is a bold, yet practical, illustration of Louis-Philippe decorative arts, combining historical classical revival motifs with solid construction and modern utility.Height : 25 inchWidth : 17 inchDepth : 12 inchHeight : 63 cmWidth : 42 cmDepth : 30 cm Ateliers Allot is a prestigious French family institution established in 1812 and headquartered on Rue de Vaugirard with showrooms in Paris, renowned for its mastery of traditional cabinetmaking and the rare ”Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” (EPV) label.
