Lady's Desk ”Argoat” (Directoire Style) - Lady's Desk ”Argoat” (Directoire Style), Ateliers Allot Carved cherrywood desk with leather writing surface; France Directoire style lady's desk known as the ”Argoat” model, constructed in solid cherrywood. The bonheur du jour form comprises a slender writing table supporting a raised cabinet with two glass inset doors and internal shelving. The writing surface includes a brown leather insert with gold tooling and an extendable hinged flap to enlarge the workspace. The apron incorporates a single flush drawer with dovetail joinery, fitted with hexagonal brass handles and a diamond shaped escutcheon. The desk stands on four tapered square section legs joined by a full width lower shelf with a scalloped front edge, reflecting late 18th century Neoclassical design associated with makers such as Georges Jacob and Guillaume Benneman. Contemporary production by Ateliers Allot, a French manufacturer established in 1812 and holder of the EPV label, integrating cabinetmaking, marquetry, woodcarving, and associated trades.
