In the introduction: "Given that since earliest times it has been a Jewish custom in every city ... to select one day a year which does not fall on Shabbat as a dedicated day of fasting by all the people of the chevra kaddisha, young and old alike ... to request forgiveness and atonement from the deceased for dealing with them over the past year.
