Letter of Shadarut on Parchment – the Shadar Rabbi Ya'akov Chai Berdugo – Signed by 40 Sages and Rabbis of Tiberias – Tiberias, 1933
Large handwritten missive, ink on parchment. By all the sages and rabbis of Tiberias and which was sent to the sages of the inner West and was given to the Shadar Rabbi Ya'akov Chai Berdugo on his way there. Tiberias, 1933.
At the beginning of the missive an inscription of verses written in a semi-circle on the upper part of the leaf. Then there are poetic words of introduction. In the missive, the rabbis of Tiberias appeal to all the rabbis and leaders of the Western cities: Gibraltar, Marrakesh … Rabat, Meknes, Fes, and many more.
In the missive, the rabbis ask to aid the city of Tiberias and support the Shadar Rabbi Ya'akov Chai Berdugo, who was sent to raise funds "to revive the spirit of the depressed, the poor, orphans and widows" by the Kollelot of Rabbi Meir Ba'al HaNes. In addition, the rabbis write that the missive is valid anywhere the aforementioned Shadar sets foot.
On the lower part of the missive, signatures of approx. 40 sages of Morocco. Among them: Rabbi Ya'akov Chai Zrihan, Rabbi David Yichyeh Yaloz, Rabbi Raphael Yona Eliyahu Mizrachi, Rabbi Pinchas Toledano, Rabbi Bechor Chaim Alchadif, Rabbi Meir yaloz, Rabbi Shalom Asudri, Rabbi Shimon Vaknn, Rabbi Yichyeh Adahan, Rabbi Massud Adahan, Rabbi Eliezer Mantzur Sethon, Rabbi Chaim Smadja, Rabbi Meir Vaknin, Rabbi Chaim David Vaknin, Rabbi Gabriel Aharon Sethon, Rabbi Meir Ochana, Rabbi Mordechai Ochana, Rabbi Yisrael Antabi, Rabbi Shmuel Asabag, Rabbi Shalom Arvach, rabbi Yitzchak Mizrachi and more.
Size of parchment 50x75cm. The text on the right margins has been erased due to dampness. In addition, several signatures are blurred, yet they are all readable. Fair condition.
