Bidspirit auction | Small Steatite Bowl, Indus Valley

Small Steatite Bowl, Indus Valley Civilization, Harappa, Indian - Condition: Cracked through the middle and repaired after damage sustained during shipping. This is small steatite (soapstone) bowl from the Indus Valley Civilization, specifically associated with Harappa. The repeated dot-and-circle patterns are characteristic of Harappan geometric design. These simple motifs often had symbolic or decorative significance rather than purely functional use. The faint figure near the base resembles an elephant, a motif seen in other Indus artifacts (especially seals), possibly indicating cultural or symbolic importance. Steatite was commonly used in Harappan artifacts because it's soft to carve and can be fired to harden. The slightly glossy, worn surface suggests it may have been treated or fired.
