Exceptional 19th Century Qajar Persian Engraved Steel Kashkul (Dervish Beggar's Bowl), Islamic. - This 19th-century Persian steel kashkul (beggar's bowl) from Qajar Iran is an exceptional example of Islamic metalwork, forged from steel in the distinctive elongated oval form traditionally associated with Sufi dervishes. Originally carried by wandering mystics as an alms bowl, the vessel also served as a symbol of spiritual poverty, humility, and devotion. The body is richly engraved with an intricate network of scrolling arabesques, floral tendrils, mythical and naturalistic animals, mounted horsemen, and finely executed figural scenes, all interwoven with elegant bands of Persian calligraphy containing mystical and poetic inscriptions. The engraved decoration reflects the refined aesthetic of the Qajar period, combining Safavid artistic traditions with 19th-century Persian craftsmanship. The kashkul retains its original suspension loops and iron chains, allowing it to be worn over the shoulder as intended. The deeply patinated steel surface displays an attractive dark grey to black tone with lighter highlights emphasizing the engraved ornamentation, while the wide circular opening and carefully forged construction demonstrate the high level of technical skill involved in its manufacture. Such steel kashkuls were often commissioned for respected dervishes or produced as prestigious devotional objects rather than ordinary utilitarian vessels. Today, examples of this quality are highly sought after for their historical significance, intricate engraving, and their association with Persian Sufism and Qajar artistic culture.
