Zoomorphic Islamic Bronze Incense Burner, Seljuk period, Persian - This zoomorphic bronze incense burner dates to the Seljuk period and reflects the refined metalwork traditions of Persia. Cast in bronze, the vessel is designed in an elaborate animal-shaped (zoomorphic) form with three stylized animal figures supporting a spherical, openwork body. The pierced geometric and vegetal patterns allowed fragrant smoke from burning incense inside to escape gracefully while also decorating the surface. A tall finial rises from the lid, enhancing its ceremonial appearance. Objects like this were used in elite homes and palaces to perfume interiors, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship and artistic imagination characteristic of Seljuk metalwork.
