A Lengthy Handwritten Letter by R. Avraham Duber Kahana-Shapiro - The Kovner Rav - Calling for the Support of Yeshivas Slabodka. Kovno 1919.

A lengthy handwritten letter, written and signed by R. Avraham Duber Kahana-Shapiro, the Rav of Kovno and author of “Devar Avraham”. In it, he asks for the support of the famed Slabodka Yeshiva which was headed at that time by R. Baruch Horowitz of Aleksat. This letter is dated 5 Shevat 5679 (January 6, 1919), a mere few weeks after the end of the First World War (which officially ended November 11, 1918). As he writes in the letter, it was still nearly impossible to obtain funds for the Yeshiva, “since our connection with those places where we usually raise money from has been stopped” (i.e. due to war), and therefore the Yeshiva was on the verge of collapse.

A fabulous letter from the Devar Avraham of Kovno. Letters from the Devar Avraham are rare. On the one hand, he describes the desperate plight of one of the most prestigious Torah Institutions of the era, and describes the general situation of Lithuanian Jewry on the other.

Signed and stamped, 5 Shevat 5679 (Jan. 6, 1919), Kovno.

In good condition. A small tear to top left corner, with loss of text.
