Bidspirit auction | A Trio Of Copper Relief
A Trio Of Copper Relief African Hunting And Domestic Scenes - A trio of copper relief panels executed in the repoussé technique, depicting traditional East or Central African scenes of hunting and domestic life. The first panel shows a man carrying a hunted gazelle or antelope over his shoulders, accompanied by a boy carrying a staff. The second panel illustrates a similar hunt scene set in marshland, featuring two waterfowl in flight with applied red and yellow pigments to their plumage. The third panel depicts a woman walking through tall grass, carrying a bundle of wood and a gourd on her head, dressed in a wrap-around skirt with red and yellow patterned details. Each panel is crafted from thin gauge copper sheet with a dark, oxidised patina and polished highlights to the raised figures. Small pin-sized holes are present at the corners and edges where they were formerly mounted to a backing. A small, faint impressed signature is visible at the bottom centre of the middle panel, reading Sissemo. The reverse of each sheet shows the negative hammered impression and significant oxidation. Height: 11.5 inches.
