Albany Cutter Sleigh (Swell Body) James Goold NY
This sleigh is attributed to the finest sleigh maker of the period, Albany Coach Works James Goold Company, Albany, NY. Goold was the one of the country's most prominent manufactures of carriages for early trains, trolleys, and street cars, but it was the design of their sleighs that really garnered the people's attention, "The Albany Cutter". The full swell body cutter which evolved from the Old Albany was referred to as the, "Santa Sleigh". These were prized by celebrities of the time and were often shipped to Russia where they were also prized. This particular sleigh was pulled from a barn in Montgomery county outside of Quakertown, PA.. It is in it's original found condition. The black paint or (ebonized finish) and red fields with multi-colored stenciling is 100% original. This barn find is in excellent condition, with a loose panel on it's lower side. Unsigned, but a known Goold Form, Circa 1850-1880. It was purchased at, The Garden Spot Equipment Auction in Lincoln, PA, (see original lot tag). I believe the consignor said her father purchased it there during the late 1970s to early 1980s. It was in the barn since. Measures approx. 123"l x 52"w x 60"h.
