A Chinese Carved Camphor Wood Chest - A large rectangular storage chest, commonly known as a camphor wood chest, constructed from tropical hardwood, likely Cinnamomum camphora. This item is characteristic of mid-20th century Chinese export furniture, typically sourced from Hong Kong or Shanghai between 1930 and 1960. The chest is decorated with profuse high-relief carvings on the lid, front, and side panels, depicting traditional Chinese maritime scenes with junks, figures, and architectural elements. The top features a recessed rectangular panel with a central uncarved semi-circle, surrounded by deep narrative carvings and framed by a continuous floral scroll border. The chest is fitted with a traditional circular brass butterfly medallion lock and original toggle pin. The use of camphor wood was historically favoured for its aromatic properties which act as a natural insect repellent.
