Each medal is constructed with a 24-carat gold-plated finish over a copper core, featuring a proof-like surface quality. The obverse of each piece displays a heraldic design showing the rose, thistle, shamrock, and leek emblems of the four home nations surrounding three central shields representing England, Scotland, and Ireland. The rim bears the Latin inscription 'REGNUM UNITUM MAGNAE BRITANNIAE ET HIBERNIAE SEPTENTRIONALIS'. The reverse of each medal is decorated with a unique full-colour photographic portrait of Princess Diana from various years including 1983, 1989, 1994, 1996, and 1997.
