Two Afghan Style Hand-Knotted Wool Tribal Runner Rugs Including A Wheatley Example - This lot comprises two Afghan style hand-knotted wool tribal runner rugs. The first rug features a deep red field decorated with a central column of seven large octagonal guls, commonly referred to as elephant foot guls, set within multiple geometric guard borders. It is constructed with a wool pile on a dark wool or goat hair foundation, finished with flat-woven kilim ends and thick dark natural wool fringes. The second rug displays a dark madder red field with a repeating pattern of small geometric guls arranged in three rows, enclosed by wide latch-hook and diamond motif borders. An attached cloth label is sewn to the reverse of the second rug, bearing the printed text 1 0 0 0 1 / - / W H E A T L E Y; the text below this line is not legible due to fraying. Both rugs exhibit traditional tribal construction methods characteristic of Northern Afghanistan weaving traditions.
