A Collection of Five Earthenware Toby Jugs and a Teapot including a James Green and Nephew Example - -hand missing from one - This lot comprises five earthenware Toby jugs and one teapot in a traditional Staffordshire style, featuring varied hand-painted polychrome and monochrome glazes. The collection includes two pieces finished in a dark brown manganese glaze, one formed as a teapot with a central projecting spout and rear handle, and the other as a standard jug, both with unglazed bases. The polychrome figures include a large Ordinary Toby jug in a blue coat and yellow waistcoat holding a foaming mug, with an incised mark to the base that appears to read O.E. A smaller jug features a blue coat and pink waistcoat with a distinctively molded handle in the form of a white putto or child. One advertising jug depicts a figure in a green coat and red breeches, with molded text to the octagonal base reading TOBY and ALE IN BOTTLE on the front, and HOARE & COs on the reverse. This piece bears a printed circular mark to the underside reading JAMES GREEN & NEPHEW, DESIGNERS &, MANUFACTURERS, LONDON. The final figure is seated in a high-backed chair holding a long clay pipe and a small jug, hand-painted in a blue coat and red breeches.
