COLLECTION OF LETTERS BY GERMAN RABBIS.

1. Halachic correspondence between Rabbi Baruch Leib Shtepich, Rabbi of Klein Ardelingen and Rabbi Zalman Wasserman, Rabbi of Mergentheim. Three and a half sides containing a responsum by Rabbi Baruch Leib, with a half page unsigned response from Rabbi Wasserman, ‘The words above are suited to their author, whom I know to be one of the great luminaries of our generation, blessed is his name and blessed is he, ari she’bachabura’

2. 2-page letter of greetings and Torah novellae sent by Rabbi Leib Ellingen – Schneitach, Dayan of Mainz, to his brother Rabbi Nathan Natta, Rabbi of Bingen.

Letter in Hebrew and Juedisch-Deutsch, dated 1833, with a few lines apparently written by his wife. On the other side of the page there is a responsum on the laws of Mikva’os.

3. Rabbi Gavriel Katz, Rabbi of Samter, letter of recommendation issued to a Shochet.

Letter dated 1852, with signature and red wax seal.

Rabbi Baruch Leib Shtepich (born ca. 1755), studied in the Yeshivos of Fuerth and Ansbach and received semicha from Rabbi Yaakov Katzenelenbogen of Ottingen. Rabbi of his hometown Klein Ardelingen, Wallerstein (1809), becoming Rabbi of the province in 1826.

Rabbi Leib Ellingen – Schneitach (1872-1847), Dayan and Rosh Yeshiva of Mainz, later succeeding Rabbi Hirtz Scheier as Rabbi of the town.

Rabbi Gavriel Katz (1784-1864), Studied at the Yeshiva of Posen under Rabbi Avraham Chaim and Rabbi Yosef Hatzadik Volkenfeld, and under Rabbi Akiva Eger in Markish Friedland. Rabbi of Tirstiegel (1815) and Samter (1831) where he headed a large Yeshiva. Author of Teshuvos Gavri and Gevuros Hashem.
