RABBI YAAKOV KAMENETZKY, ROSH YESHIVA TORAH VADAAS, HEARTBROKEN LETTER ABOUT THE OBLIGATION TO CAMPAIGN AGAINST AUTOPSIES BEING CARRIED OUT IN ISRAEL. 1967. HANDWRITTEN SIGNED LETTER.

An exceptionally sharply worded letter by Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky, Rosh Yeshiva of Torah Vadaas in New York, protesting against autopsies being carried out in Israel. ‘We face a terrible decree against our Jewish brothers in the Holy Land, where the body of any person who dies in hospital is in the hands of the doctors and pathologists to dissect and cut up, and for our many sins, they spend their time in this way as if they were dealing with rabbits and mice, and people have become aware that human limbs are found in garbage sites with utter disrespect.’ The Rosh Yeshiva calls to join the Vaad Lemaan Kevod Ha’adam in their work to improve the situation.

Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky (b. 1891-1986), studied at the Yeshivos of Slabodka and Lomza. Son-in-law of Rabbi Dov Hirsh Heller – Mashgiach of the Lomza Yeshiva. Rabbi of Tzitvian in Lithuania (1926-1937), before leaving for America where he served as Rabbi of Seattle and later in Toronto (1938-1945). He was then appointed lecturer - and later as Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva Torah Vadaas. He was recognised as on of the greatest American rabbinical leaders, and is the author of Emes Le’Yaakov and other works.
