UNIQUE RARE ITEM! FASCINATING LETTER CONTAINING QUOTES FROM FAMOUS CHASSIDIC LEADERS, RABBI CHAIM HALBERSTAM – THE DIVREI CHAIM OF SANZ, RABBI YITZCHAK ISAAK OF KOMARNO, RABBI YITZCHAK ISAAC OF ZIDACZOW AND OTHERS, AND DESCRIBING JEWISH LIFE IN PRE-WWI ROMANIA AND HUNGARY. LETTER FROM RABBI YISRAEL BERGER OF PROBUZNA AND BUCHAREST TO RABBI YOSEF LEIB SOFER OF PAKS. HANDWRITTEN SIGNED LETTER.

A fascinating 8-side letter written by the famous chassidic rabbi and author Rabbi Yisrael Berger, Rabbi of Bucharest, to Rabbi Yosef Leib Sofer of Paks, dated 1909.

Rabbi Berger expresses his wish to give up the Bucharest rabbinate due to the regrettable state of religious observance in Romania - which he describes in the letter – and to settle in a strictly orthodox community in Hungary earning his livelihood through his knowledge of segulos and cures, which have been proven to be very successful. In support of his plans, he reports that the great Rabbi Chanoch Henoch, Rebbe of Alesk, had told him that it would be for the benefit of his soul to accept kvitlech (written petitions for help) and donations from people and give them his blessings. He quotes similar instructions from the Rebbe of Komarno, as well as statements about his soul and his future revealed to him by other great chassidic leaders.

This remarkable letter also gives a fascinating contemporary description of religious conditions in different areas and communities of Hungary and Romania, and quotes chassidic traditions from reliable sources.

Close adherent of Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Eichenstein - Rebbe of Zidaczow, and a son-in-law of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Hager, Rebbe of Zaboltow.
